![]() That is, after coming off you won’t automatically respawn on your bike you’ll need to jog over to wherever the bike came to a stop, lift it up, and hop back on. Of course, if you’re a complete purist, rewinds and all other assists can be reduced or toggled off to force you to suffer the full consequences of coming off your bike so that you can experience one of the most notable new additions this year: a full, manual bike-retrieval sequence. I for one think that’s a more sensible approach it certainly makes it more forgiving on cack-handed maniacs like me. “The rewind feature also returns to take the sting out of learning to ride in MotoGP 21, and unlike in Milestone’s Supercross 4 it’s an unlimited resource here. As such, despite its otherwise steep difficulty curve, MotoGP 21 is probably the most beginner-friendly MotoGP game in years, and I think the effort to make it slightly less impenetrable for newbies is a very good move. MotoGP 20 never took time to educate you on how to ride or even how to use your bike’s systems, but this year’s instalment rectifies that with a simple series of playable lessons outlining everything from straightforward bike control, to fuel management, and to electronic systems like engine brake, anti-wheelie, and traction control – all of which can be adjusted on track, on the fly. Mode Rashįor racing fans yet to try Milestone’s series, MotoGP 21 turns out to be a good year to jump in thanks to a new tutorial mode that adds an extremely useful launchpad for getting accustomed to MotoGP’s tricky brand of bike racing. As a result, pulling off a win or placing well after a great fight on track is a rather rewarding experience. Even with those crutches, however – and even against relatively sedate levels of AI competition – MotoGP 21 requires a high level of finesse to succeed. ![]() MotoGP 21 is an extremely demanding racer, though, and the degree of difficulty increases exponentially the more you lower the riding aids, which offer assists like throttle and braking input modulation and a cornering assist that irons out frantic left stick inputs – basically an invisible guiding hand to help the bike dip left and right more smoothly. From researching upgrades to establishing a junior team, MotoGP 21 sticks closely to last year’s script. It’s like having a Discovery Turbo documentary featured inside an already excellent story mode, complete with a surprising amount of unlockable pilots, which then become available on MotoGP 22‘s more traditional “arcade modes”.“Off the track, there are plenty of staff opportunities and R&D tasks to juggle to improve your bike’s performance – of course, that stuff has become pretty typical in modern motorsport sims, including MotoGP 20. You’re then told to relive these highlights via a handful of scenarios, all while being greeted to some incredibly well-narrated cutscenes featuring footage of the season in question. The reason for it is simple: 2009 is arguably considered the best season in MotoGP history, with four main pilots battling neck to neck for the trophy, with some shocking upsets and heroic antics along the way. The best part about this 2022 game is being able to relive 2009. In it, you’re thrown into the 2009 MotoGP season. What makes this game better than any other MotoGP title, as well as any other motorbike racing simulator in recent memory, is a mode called Nine Season 2009. The lifelong Milestone tradition of giving you an undercooked and borderline useless character creator for the sake of it. The usage of the DualSense’s adaptive triggers remains the same no need to fix what isn’t broken. You will fall down a few dozen times at first. However, it will require a bit of patience and hard work from you before you’re able to actually beat races with ease. As always, it does feature a ton of tutorials and racing aids to make this seemingly newcomer-unfriendly title less intimidating for rookies. It also retains the same gameplay as before, which can best be described as “still hard for newcomers, still somewhat punishing, but when compared to other motorbike racing simulators, it’s like playing Mario Kart“. Given how the game runs at incredibly high speeds, you won’t pay a lot of attention to them, but they do stand out in pre-race cutscenes. It still looks pretty decent, with well-built motorbikes and a phenomenal framerate backed by the highest of resolutions, with the rest of its assets (props, pilots, etc) being comprised of what I can only assume are the exact same props used in the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game. ![]() Technically speaking, there isn’t a lot that differs MotoGP 22 from its 2021 iteration. Still tough, but full of tutorials and aids to make it look like it cares about your feelings.
